Chinese takeaways:

Oriental House, St Botolphs' circus. Colchester. Superb, quick and very friendly. It's Sunday afternoon and I promised the kids a "Chinese" this week. I searched the web and couldn't find another Chinese in town that was open and would deliver. So its the reliable old favourite Oriental House on St Bott’s roundabout to the rescue. Following our last experience (9/10) the anticipation is growing. The doorbell has just sounded, tons of little tin foil trays full of fresh, tasty Chinese food, well-seasoned, steaming hot and "FRESH" tasting. We will be reheating for at least a week! Thai takeaways:

Thai1 on East Hill, Colchester. We have tried the food both as a takeaway and in the restaurant recently. The food served is as "fresh" and light as any good Thai takeaway should be. The house special King prawn butterfly is amazing. Thai-1.co.uk 8/10 Tel Colchester 01206 870011

Kebabs, pizza, burgers & fried chicken:

Istanbul Delight, 9 st Botolphs' St, Colchester. Great friendly service. They do a house special kebab to die for (Strips of Doner and Kofte kebab on warm pita bread and covered in specially prepared sauce) or for pizza lovers the "hot n smelly" is a must. The Kings of the "kebab alley". Free delivery for orders over a tenner. Very quick and friendly. 9.5/10 Our favourites during 2011 www.istanbuldelight.co.uk     Tel Colchester 01206 579251

Indian takeaways:

Curry Hut. 34 Osborne St, Colchester.
I just received a flyer through the letter box and thought I would give it a go.
The phone was answered promptly and VERY professionally. Without a numbered menu my order was understood and confirmed by the telephonist with ease.
FANTASTIC: delivered piping hot and in good time. Looks great so ……… Getting stuck in.
Happy days, I now have a favourite Indian in town that delivers in more ways than one. 8/10 www.curryhut-co2.co.uk Tel 01206 769209

Zaal Colchester, 47 St Botolphs' St, Colchester.
Zaal "specialize" in serving "Bangladeshi" food that required a translator to convert to Indian what I fancied.

I played safe with onion bhajis, lamb Madras and Pilau rice with garlic nann as I wasn't sure. The food was delivered 30 minutes after the order was placed at the same price confirmed over the phone.

The 4 huge onion bhajis were "raw" in the middle owing to them being the size of a tennis ball. No dips or toppings were offered but needed. The lamb main course was enough for two, tender and tasty without having any real depth of flavour but nice all the same and quite spicy hot.

The rice makes me pause, I sniff, I delve a little deeper before trying as it looks like hundreds and thousands have been in the mix.
It's nice. Nothing surprising but bland, boiled rice with added hundreds & thousands. Forget it with the garlic nann, only half cooked and browned. 6/10 Tel Colchester 01206 545111

Maharani Indian restaurant and takeaway: 102 High St, Colchester.

Sandwiches:

There is a shop on St Johns Rd near the junction with Parsons Rd, Colchester.
They do a "mega" ham salad & hot beef sandwiches.
They have the most friendly and helpful staff in the town. 8/10

Miller Bros Garages. For the very best pre-packed sandwiches in Essex please seek out your local Miller Bros garage.
I hate buying food or snacks whilst on the road but needs must (most days). Check out their cold shelf, if they have a cheese and onion sandwich with thick cut white bread, Cheddar cheese and onion buy it, they are really good. I will try and buy some more soon. 7/10

Trotters, Sandwiches, Panini, hot jackets all made to order.
Order online before 11.30am make your order from the comfort of your own desk and pop down to collect your hot or cold lunch from the bar at your convenience.
They also offer freshly made coffee throughout the day. 7/10

22 Middleborough. Colchester. Trottersbar.co.uk Tel 01206 769881

Kathleen's Kitchen. The bakers opposite Argos in the town centre.
Very good
and tasty "ready to go" sandwiches, sausage rolls and pies. Great bread and friendly staff. They could make a killing if they could offer sandwiches freshly made to order. 7/10

Subway. I stopped off between the butchers & bakers in town on St Bott's and fancied either a simple bacon butty or a ham sandwich but "stumbled" into Subway.
After being bamboozled with an array of "specials" and "add ons" I left with a toasted ham and cheese sandwich wrapped in enough paper to publish the Gazette and an instant cappuccino in hand.
I was pleasantly surprised with the taste of the sandwich. The bread was a bit frozen-sweet but the cheese and ham were
very good. (Don't ask about the coffee!) 5/10

Fish and chip shops:

We need a fish and chip shop that takes phone orders & delivers. Any recommendations?

The only fish and chips I have found for delivery was from one of the Indian takeaways that I cant publish the revue about! Help!

Henley's of Wivenhoe, 9 Vine Parade, Wivenhoe, always appear to be winning some award or another.
Very professional
set-up. It's great to be able to see and choose the fish you want. The portions of chips are massive but a little bit pricey.
A visit on a Friday evening would be a pleasure if they could introduce a little fun and banter behind the counter. 7/10

Fish N chick N can be found in the little shopping arcades on St Johns and at The Willows in Colchester.
They do GREAT fish & Chips (a bit too pricey & the mushy peas are a little watery) along with very nice roasted chicken, ribs and burgers. 7/10 www.fishnchickn.co.uk

Mr Chippy, St Botolph's and St Johns St Colchester.
When walking around the Queen st and St Johns St area of Colchester on a Saturday afternoon and walked past a teenager with a paper bag smelling delightfully of vinegar? it's Mr Chippy chips loaded with salt and vinegar.
I was a little disgruntled on my first visit over the high price of the chips but as they give you masses I forgive them, my daughter, wife and myself just share one portion which is ample. The fried fish and sausages are good and the mushy peas are excellent. 7/10

Scooby Snax in Brightlingsea. The idea is fantastic, how could a "good" chippy fail to impress in a close knit fishing community? Serving breakfast-lunch and dinner.
The service was once again "short" and I say this after visiting three times over the past four weeks.
The owner-manager-chef does not come across as being a happy bunny! On my last visit and after quickly asking for my order, my Cod and chips where dispensed into the frier's and he disappeared!! a little concerned after around 5 minutes I attracted the attention of a very helpful server who quickly and cheerfully wrapped my order. The chips alone would score a 3-4 out of 10 but the fish was VERY VERY good. 7/10

Miscellaneous:

Wine Me Up
: Now you have selected your takeaway what are you doing for drinks?
Wine Me Up on North Hill, Colchester now deliver within 7 miles: Beers, wines, spirits and soft drinks.  Tel 01206 563 097 for delivery details. 9/10 (It's a great idea)

MacDonalds
, Colchester High St, Tollgate & on Cowdray Av in Colchester.
Exactly what you would expect! 5/10

K F C Colchester High St. Very, very good value bucket deals and FANTASTIC southern fried chicken.
The shop is a little bit scruffy and the staff on "the front-line" are always just too busy!
I don't know how they can make a humble French fry taste so undercooked, limp and overcooked all at the same time! 5/10

We can't publish any of "our" revues scoring less than 5/10 but we can publish your findings!
